While we are permanently scared to fail &#8211; in whatever area of life, we tend to miss one ting out: Mistakes are natural and even more &#8211; necessary. So we can define it as an <b>action<\/b> that does <b>not match a distinct goal<\/b>. Working &amp; organizational psychology defines it like that. This implies that there has to be a <b>defined<\/b>\u00a0<b>goal<\/b>\u00a0and that we make an effort to achieve it. Goal and effort don\u00b4t have to be\u00a0conscious &#8211; they can also be un- or subconscious. No matter how hard you try to avoid&#8221;<\/i><span style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">. That left me startled. This statement dropped a bomb in my &#8220;perfectionist&#8221; mindset. But after a while I felt relief. We fail &#8211; mistakes do happen!\u00a0And even if we can avoid some of them, we can\u00b4t catch them all. Another thing I learnt is: Errors help us via feedback to correct a an action. And folks &#8211; that\u00b4s evolution, no? It\u00b4s exactly what we can see reflected in evolution of mother earth: Failure was necessary to adapt for survival. We actually need errors &amp; failure!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ebd374 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2ebd374\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>Significance of<\/b> Failure<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ad59e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6ad59e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If a decision or action fails, we learn something.\u00a0An error contains information we can use for adaptation &amp; correction.\u00a0<b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0925753524001681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psychological error research<\/a>\u00a0<\/u><\/b>refers to errors as\u00a0<b>signals<\/b> that contribute feedback information before, while and after taking action. An error can tell us what to\u00a0<b>adjust<\/b>\u00a0and <b>adapt\u00a0<\/b>to achieve a desired goal. Failure of achievement in the first run\u00a0can help us to understand how to shape &amp; direct an action to get where we want. If you apply this to your life, it may help you reevaluate your judgement. Is failure really that bad? Or can you open up to failure as an\u00a0<b>important tool<\/b>\u00a0to <b>adjust<\/b>\u00a0and correct your actions to <b>achieve your goal?<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd24857 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bd24857\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>Judgement <\/b>of failure<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0139bf3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0139bf3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Imagine a child that tries to learn to walk.\u00a0It stands, takes a step, falls down. It stands up, loses balance, falls down again. It will probably bump several times. It will cry. The road of\u00a0<i>&#8220;I want to walk!&#8221;<\/i>\u00a0is plastered with failure. In that process some steps will be successful, others won\u00b4t. Thus, the child focuses on what works and continues. <b>Development<\/b> happens. In this case every misstep is a tool for the child (and also for us) to <b>correct direction of action<\/b>: An option to try something different, to adapt, to shape. And by doing so &#8211; the child finally learns how <b>walking<\/b> works. A child would never judge an error as a sign to stop trying.\u00a0Because that\u00b4s not natural! The\u00a0<b><u>natural response<\/u>\u00a0<\/b>towards failure is to make use of it. It\u00b4s a tool to move on. So what happened? Why are we so scared to fail? Why are our judgements of failure so negative &amp; strict?\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80cb9cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"80cb9cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Stress due to <b>fear of<\/b> Failure<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-321f510 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"321f510\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>What scares and paralyzes us not the errors themselves. But the judgments we connect to them. For a long time, I procrastinated important decisions because of the thoughts dominating my life <i>(f.i. \u201cShould I start my own business or not?\u201d)<\/i>. The fear of failure (a big mistake) left me stuck &amp; frozen in indecision. Despite knowing exactly what I wanted, I felt trapped in a <u>cycle of hesitation<\/u>. The more I worried, the more mistakes I ended up making.<\/p><p>The <u><b>fear of failure<\/b><\/u> is something we all carry within us. Countless conversations with my clients revealed how <u>pervasive<\/u> this fear can be. It\u00b4s always been the same pattern, that could be observed: A creative spark\u00a0pops up &#8211; ideas about a goal, a project that initially feels full of potential. Followed by doubts creeping in. Thoughts like, <i>\u201cWhat if this doesn\u2019t work?\u201d \u201cWhat if people laugh at me?\u201d<\/i> or <i>\u201cWhat if I\u2019m heading in the wrong direction?\u201d<\/i>. Result: Motivation evaporates in an instant. Because there\u00b4s always an &#8220;after&#8221;.\u00a0So\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">what would be then?<\/span><\/p><p style=\"color: #003738; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Wouldn&#8217;t we find a solution to continue? <br \/>The Stress Loop creates an artificial dead end in our conclusions.\u00a0There\u00b4s no thinking\u00a0through. Usually the thoughts stop after the error and the worst case. There\u00b4s the dead end. But it\u00b4s not real. What we do <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">after<\/span> we\u00b4ve failed? <br \/>The dead end of the stress loop often leaves us without acting at all. So we do nothing, though we want to. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-73f18cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"73f18cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Error <b>evaluation<\/b> <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad26f66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad26f66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It&#8217;s easy to be harsh on ourselves after making a mistake. Most people criticize themselves and feeling guilty. We often<b> label<\/b> an error as &#8220;bad&#8221; or &#8220;unforgivable.&#8221; These judgments usually originate in <u><b>old, unquestioned beliefs<\/b><\/u>. <br \/>However, a more relaxed and less judgmental approach would be healthier and more energy-efficient. Instead of focusing on blame, we can reflect on the lessons an error teaches us: What did we do wrong? How can we correct? Are there any adjustments possible? Can we reduce negative consequences? Sometimes, we may even need to ask for forgiveness.<\/p><p>I encourage you to be <u>more neutral<\/u> when you evaluate mistakes. It\u00b4s a skill and source, if you can see your missteps without blaming yourself. Good judgment arises from regret. And that\u00b4s it. If you have to: Regret and then &#8211;<b> let go<\/b>. Lesson learnt.<br \/>Use your errors to grow and move forward. It takes time, but with practice, you\u2019ll notice your mindset shifting.
